Filipino Communist Attacks Gold Mine Killing 5 Soldiers

The New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), attacked Philex’s gold mine in central Philippines killing 5 soldiers on Saturday.

NPA fighters attacked a Philex mining site, a major mining company in Philippines, located in Negros Island, burning heavy equipment and buildings on Friday, according to the military spokesman Captain Leo Christopher Cunanan.

The military pursued the NPA fighters and clashed on Saturday, resulting five deaths and two injured. The rebels took six firearms.

The reasons are not clear yet, but the country’s falling economic and political condition is not a surprising after 44 years of insurgency.

The death toll of the Filipino insurgency is estimated by 30,000. The south-eastern country provides mining companies with the cheapest labor in the world.
