Protesters marched Saturday to Thessaloniki, the north Greek city, against environment-threatening gold mining operation, belongs to by Canadian-based Eldorado Gold Corp, (TSX:ELD) (NYSE:EGO).
Protesters carried banners reading “Toxic dirt have No boundaries. No gold mines” in Thessaloniki while in Athens, 500 grouped with the same purpose, AFP said.
Eldorado is responsible of four gold operations through its subsidiary Hellenic Gold, with the biggest of them on the Halkidiki peninsula, the focus of disputes as it is a tourist area.
More than 200 people in the Halkidiki tourist district are due in court on criminal charges related to the demonstrations, AFP says.
