The European Union said on Wednesday that the new industrial orders in the euro areadeclined in September, the biggest decline since December 2008 and the decline is far worse than economists’ expectations in the latest sign that Europe is heading towards a recession.

He said the European statistics office Eurostat said orders in the euro area, which includes 17 countries fell 6.4% in September compared with August, far belowexpectations, down by 2.5% and France and Germany recorded a large contractions.

The registered capital goods orders, a gauge of investment in new equipment and the biggest decline in September compared to the previous month came down 6.8 percent, suggesting that the managers of factories and companies issued clear directives to reduce expansion plans.

On an annual basis the new industrial orders fell in the euro area by 1.6% in September, while the economists polled by Reuters had expected an increase of 8%
